Saudi delegation pays visit. Twenty Saudi Arabian businessmen and
government officials have been in Christchurch to foster links with
New Zealand. The delegation – led by the Saudi Commerce Minister,
Dr Osama bin Ja’afar Al Faqeeh – was in Christchurch as part of a
whistle-stop tour in a jumbo jet. Dr Al Faqeeh said: “… on an
official level we have had a very fruitful week of discussions. “New
Zealand and Saudi Arabia have a very cordial relationship on
political, trade, economic, and other levels. “There is a lot to be
learnt from your experience in agriculture,” he said. Canterbury
Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said
it was the most powerful trade delegation from Saudi Arabia. The
visit represented not only great trade opportunities for exporters,
but was a good networking chance for Christchurch’s tourism and
education providers, he said. Half of Saudi Arabia’s 23 million
people are under 20, and training in New Zealand is half the cost of
that in the United States and the United Kingdom. Sir Gil Simpson,

30 Nov 2002 -
Saudis hit back over funding claims – War on terror. A row
between the United States and Saudi Arabia over the funding of
terrorism has turned into a no-holds-barred battle, with the kingdom
unleashing the fury of its normally State-restrained media against
Washington. The flare-up began with allegations that thousands of
dollars in charitable gifts from Princess Haifa bint Faisal – wife
of the Saudi Ambassador in Washington – had found their way to
friends of two of the September 11 hijackers. Although there is no
evidence that the princess knew where the money had gone, Riyadh
views the affair as part of a campaign by US neo-conservatives to
implicate prominent Saudis in the financing of al-Qaeda. An attempt
at a placatory statement by the White House spokesman, Ari Fleischer
– that “Saudi Arabia is a good partner in the war against
terrorism but it can do more” – only fuelled Saudi anger.
Accusing the White House of becoming caught up in a “hysterical
media frenzy”, and pandering “to congressional prima donnas in a
most disgraceful way”, the Jeddah-based Arab news said Fleischer’s
veiled attack had opened a breach between the two countries that
would be difficult to close. “Who does Washington think it is to
administer such a slap in the face or make such imperious demands?”
the paper asked. “Are we Iraq? Are we the Afghanistan of the
Taliban? We are a close ally of the US.” Other Saudi papers joined
the fray. In language that could not have been used without official
blessing, al-Watan newspaper accused the US of trying to blackmail
the kingdom. A report in the Washington Post on Tuesday, citing an
unnamed American official, said the US would ask the Saudis to act on
Intelligence about terrorist financing – with the threat of an
ultimatum if they failed to do so. The Secretary of State, Colin
Powell, said later there was no substance in reports of an ultimatum.
But the US does have a list of wealthy individuals – mostly Saudis
– who it believes are financing al-Qaeda and it is seeking to
freeze their assets. Many Saudis dismiss as ridiculous the idea that
members of the royal family would willingly provide al-Qaeda with
funds. (Chch Pres NZ 30 Nov 2002 AP).

25 Oct 2003 -
Global-wide charity linked to terrorists The sprawling Al-Haramain
charity, founded in Saudi Arabia in 1992, is along the world’s
largest Muslim charities, distributing a reported $87 million
($US53m) a year on mosques, schools, and other development projects.
It has been active in some 50 different countries – including
Chechnya and several in East Africa, the Balkans, and Asia – with
the stated aims of providing Islamic education and offering
humanitarian aid. It has built a reported 1300 mosques and operated
some 20 orphanages. In 1998 it was banned in Kenya on suspicion of
involvement in the bomb attack on the US Embassy in Nairobi. In March
2002, as part of its declared “war on terror”, the United States
froze assets of two branches of the charity in Somalia and
Bosnia-Herzegovina citing links with terrorist groups, including
al-Qaeda. At the time, US officials stressed the charity as a whole
was legitimate although the entire organization was cited on some US
lists of anti-terror groups. Now, only the Bosnian and Somalian
branches are officially linked by the US and other governments to
terrorism. In June this year – just weeks after the suicide
bombings in Riyadh – Saudi authorities said they would close all
Al-Haramain operations outside Saudi Arabia. Its international
website was taken off-line. The New Zealand Government maintains that
only its Somali and Bosnian branches are known to have terrorism
links. Christchurch
mosque’s history.
Christchurch’s mosque, known to Muslims as Masjid Annur (the mosque
of light) is the first and oldest mosque in the south island of New
Zealand. It opened in 1985, after the city’s Muslim community, then
numbering 300, outgrew a converted house in Tuam street. The new
building was partly funded by a $460,000 gift from the Saudi kingdom.
The mosque, in Deans avenue opposite Hagley Park, has become a hub of
Islamic activities catering for a wide spectrum of Muslim nationally.
Muslims have lived in Canterbury since 1874. The community did not
establish a collective presence until the 1970s, and raised funds to
buy headquarters in a Tuam street house in the early 1980s. It
quickly outgrew that site and planning was started to develop a
mosque. Three Saudi students living in Christchurch used their
contacts in Saudi Arabia to secure a large injection of cash making
it possible to build the mosque. This was followed by a $460,000
donation from the Saudi ambassador. The mosque was completed and
opened in late 1985. The Muslim community in Christchurch currently
numbers about 3500 from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, from
throughout Asia, parts of Africa, and the Middle East. Its numbers
have been swelled by the recent influx of migrants and refugees from
Somalia and Afghanistan. Plans are under way for a Muslim primary
school in Christchurch to cost an estimated $550,000. (Chch Press NZ
25 Oct 2003).
