Haiti




1493 – Juan Ponce de Leon sailed on Christopher Colombus’s second voyage to the Dominican republic and Haiti. (History Today. April 2013 UK).

1508 – Juan Ponce de Leon of Spain settled in Haiti. He led an expedition to Puerto Rico in search of gold, which he found. He founded a Spanish colony there and was made governor. (History Today. April 2013 UK).

1791-1802 – 14 Aug 1791 Boris Caiman voodoo, 8 days later attacks on plantations. By Sept 1791 over 1,000 plantations were burned. Tens of thousands of people were killed. Racism against black Haitians. Pres John Adams. 1799 Haiti slavery. (Red heat. Alex von Tunzelmann (c)2011 UK).

1794-1806 – July 1794 Napoleon. Slavery was allegedly outlawed in 1794. An epidemic of yellow fever kiled most of the French troops. On 18 Nov 1803 the French army was defeated.
